The koala(Phascolarctos cinereus) is a marsupial that lives in Australia’s eucalypt forests, primarily in the states of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. It spends almost all of its life in the trees and is adapted to life in the canopy with its sharp claws and strong limbs.
The koala is a herbivore and feeds exclusively on eucalyptus leaves, which are nutrient-poor and difficult to digest. It has a slow metabolism and sleeps up to 20 hours a day to conserve energy.
It lives alone or in loose social structures. Females typically have one pup at a time, which remains in the scrotum for the first six months.
The koala is threatened by habitat destruction, forest fires and diseases such as chlamydia, which have significantly reduced its population. Conservation efforts are working to protect its habitat.
